The Purpose of the California Highway Patrol

The California Highway Patrol was created in 1929 to provide uniform traffic law enforcement throughout the state.  Assuring the safe, convenient and efficient transportation of people and goods on our highway system is still our primary purpose.

We Want to Hear From You

In an ongoing effort to monitor and improve the services we provide to the public, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is requesting your assistance in evaluating our performance. By completing the survey, you will enable the CHP to address your concerns, develop solutions to potential problems, and better serve the needs of the community.

You are the CHP

Our job is critical and we take an oath to stand for something bigger than ourselves – to provide safety, service and security to all the citizens and visitors of our state. CHP is embarking on a mission to fill 1,000 officer positions by hiring qualified individuals from California’s diverse communities. Opportunity awaits by becoming one of the CHP 1000.

Electrics Bicycles safety and Trainings

Authored by Assembly Member Tasha Boerner, AB 1946 requires the California Highway Patrol to develop statewide safety and training programs based on evidence-based practices for users of electric bicycles (E-Bikes), including, but not limited to, general E-Bike riding safety, emergency maneuver skills, rules of the road, and laws about E-Bikes.

Successful Apprehension of Suspect Following High-Speed Pursuit
Recently CHP officers from the Oakland Area office successfully apprehended a suspect after a high-speed pursuit that started in the Oakland area on the 98th avenue off-ramp from I-880. With the help of our CHP Golden Gate Air Operations unit, the suspect was tracked and apprehended at the intersection of 86th Avenue and Birch Street after attempting to flee on foot.
The vehicle was confirmed stolen, and officers recovered a ghost gun, suspected crystal methamphetamine, and key fob programmers. The suspect was booked into jail on multiple charges, including firearm possession, controlled substances, burglary tools, evading arrest, and vehicle theft.
